Russia was, at the time, a grand empire ruled by Czar Nicolas II. Russia's role in the first world war was to protect it's ally Serbia, who was the target of Austria-Hungary. Russia also had one of the biggest manpower pools of the original three major allied powers. Russia was mainly in an offensive against the Austrians and the northern tip of the German Empire.
Russia was, however, very unstable and so many rebellions happened during WWI. First it was the March Revolution, then it was the October Revolution, in which the Communists took over and pulled out of WWI. |
The United States was the latest entry of the war. The US joined the war in 1917 due to the Zimmerman plot, which was a telegram from Germany to Mexico trying to persuade them to declare war on the US. This failed and the British showed it to the US, causing them to join the war.
The US helped on the western front of the war, sending millions to the trenches. This, backed up by superior American production, lead to an easy defeat of the Germans at the end. |
