WWI was one of, if not the worst war that humanity had experienced up until that point. It lasted from 1914-1918 as a result of the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, the Austria-Hungarian arch duke in 1914. This war was between the Triple Entente and the Central Powers. Millions died in the struggle and millions more suffered in the trenches.

The last global conflict that happened before WWI was the Napoleonic Wars of the early 1800 hundreds, so military technology had come a long way from the simple bayonet to planes, submarines, grenades and much more. Not only this, but world tensions were rising due to recent events such as the recent Balkan Wars, the colonization of Libya in 1910 and the fact that many nations were building up their armies, and being very imperialist.
All of this came to a head when Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary was shot in Basina, a territory Austria-Hungary owned at the time. |
